SPRINGFIELD, N.J. (July 29, 2025) – Amelie Phung from Forest Hills, N.Y., leads the girls’ division, and Jack Chung of Greenwich, Conn., Lucas Rizo-Patron of Rye, N.Y., and Holden Schipper of Lebanon, N.Y., lead the boys’ division at the 23rd Carter Cup at Baltusrol Golf Club.

Chung, the 2024 co-champion of the Carter Cup, opened with a bogey on No. 10 before closing his opening nine holes with three birdies over his last five holes. A birdie on the par-5 seventh got the 17-year-old back to 2-under.
Rizo-Patron had four birdies and two bogeys to finish at 2-under. The 18-year-old made the turn at even par before playing his final seven holes in 3-under par to grab a share of the lead.
Schipper carded an opening round 2-under 69, highlighted by five birdies. Three of those birdies came on the front nine—Nos. 2, 7, and 9.
Michael Asselta of Ramsey, N.Y., Rayhao Feng of Short Hills, N.J., and Jesse Hellring of New York, N.Y., share second place at 1-under par. Four more competitors sit two shots back at even par.
Phung finished her first round at 4-over 76 and leads by seven shots over Jessica Kim of Tenafly, N.J. The 17-year-old started on No. 10 and went out in 2-over 38. After a double bogey on par-4 fifth, Phung tallied her lone birdie of the round on the par-4 eighth.
It is the first year the Carter Cup features a girls’ division.
The 54 competitors played the Lower Course in the morning and will play the newly renovated Upper Course in the afternoon.
