Getting Started in Golf: A Beginner’s Checklist

Heading to the golf course for the first time? It’s normal to feel a little unsure about what to bring, what to wear, and what to expect. The good news is that getting started in golf is easier than most people think. You don’t need a full set of clubs or years of experience—just a few essentials, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn. Use this beginner’s checklist to help you arrive prepared, feel more confident, and focus on what matters most: having fun and enjoying the game.

In the Bag:

Needs:

– Clubs (Feel free to borrow or rent)
– Balls & tees
– Ball marker (A coin works)
– Flat shoes (No running shoes)

Nice-to-Haves:

– Glove
– Divot repair tool
– Golf shoes
– Towel
– “Fancy” ball marker

Apparel:

– Collared shirt, skirt/skort, or shorts/pants, outerwear
– Check the course dress code

Arriving at the Course:

– Bag drop, check-in with staff (Clubs are not allowed in the clubhouse)
– Locker room, change shoes
– Warm up – Driving range, practice green
– Head to the tee early (About 10 min)

On the Course:

– Remember etiquette, know the format
– Tee it forward! Keep up with the pace
– Caddies can help!
– Don’t worry about asking for help with rules
– Keep Calm – Certain – and Confident
