Golfworks est. 1994

GOLFWORKS  is the MGA Foundation’s cornerstone program, created in 1994. The program provides meaningful summer internships for high school students at more than 70 participating MGA Member Clubs throughout the Met Area. The program started with just 12 students at 6 clubs, and now more than 300 students are employed as interns each summer. The program’s success, thanks to the support of Founding Partner MetLife, is a critical link to helping the MGAF make the game of golf and meaningful employment accessible to everyone.

The GOLFWORKS program places student interns at MGA member clubs and facilities where they spend the summer working in various areas of the club industry. Interns learn from industry professionals and may spend time working in the golf shop, as part of the food and beverage service, on the grounds staff, or as part of the clubhouse operations. For many, this is a “first job” and provides professional and life lessons that helps interns succeed with their future education plans and careers.

GOLFWORKS focuses on goals to provide an introduction not only to the golf industry, but the workforce in general:

  • To provide meaningful employment, in a friendly environment for needs-based young men and women;

  • To develop positive skill sets that will enable broader career options in the future;

  • To provide exposure to positive role models and build self-esteem;

  • To provide regular exposure to the game and a chance to develop some level of skill, as well as a knowledge of the game’s Rules and etiquette;

  • To enable clubs to interact with their communities in a positive way and to enrich and improve the lives of young people who are need-driven;

  • To open up the golf industry to a new generation – one that truly reflects our diverse, multi-cultural society.

GOLFWORKS – In Their Own Words

Being a GOLFWORKS intern and having that work experience at Deepdale has meant the world to me. The sport has taught me so much about life.

Brendan Campbell, GOLFWORKS intern 2017-2021

My co-workers helped me learn it’s okay to make mistakes and you can’t let that deter you. Once you know that, you can really enjoy your experience and do your best work.
