Handicapping & World Handicap System Resources

Everything you need to understand, manage, and use your Handicap Index® including scoring rules, course ratings, and World Handicap System (WHS) tools.

Understanding Your Handicap Index

A Handicap Index represents your demonstrated scoring ability and allows golfers of different skill levels to compete on equal terms.

What is a Handicap Index?

A Handicap Index® is a number that represents your demonstrated golfing ability. It allows golfers of different skill levels to compete fairly against one another. Your Handicap Index is portable, meaning it can be used at any rated golf course around the world.

Why does a Handicap Index matter?

A Handicap Index makes the game more enjoyable and equitable by allowing golfers of varying abilities to compete on a level playing field. It also lets you:

  • Track your improvement over time
  • Participate in tournaments and leagues
  • Play fair matches with friends
  • Establish a recognized measure of your playing ability

How often does my Handicap Index update?

Your Handicap Index updates daily. Scores should be posted on the day you play, and your revised Handicap Index is calculated overnight and available the following day.

What is the difference between Course Handicap vs Playing Handicap?

A Course Handicap™ adjusts your Handicap Index based on the difficulty of the course and tees you’re playing. It tells you how many strokes you need to play to par on that specific course.

A Playing Handicap™ is the number of strokes you actually receive during a particular game or competition. It may be the same as your Course Handicap, but can change if a handicap allowance is applied or if the competition format requires an adjustment.

A simple way to remember it:

  • Course Handicap = You against the course
  • Playing Handicap = You against the other players

How do I get a Handicap Index?

To establish a Handicap Index, post a minimum of 54 holes of acceptable scores (any combination of 9- and 18-hole rounds). Once you’ve posted enough scores, your initial Handicap Index will be generated automatically.
